Week 10 Readings

1.)Mischo: Digital Libraries
I was unable to access this reading.

2.)Open Archives Initiative
The OAI was created to develop standards to facilitate the sharing of content electronically. The Open Language Archives Community (OLAC) is working on a "worldwide virtual library of language resources." The Sheet Music Consortium is working on building a collection of freely available sheet music. The National Science Digital Library (NSDL) has a goal to provide access to content of collections of a science base.

3.)White Paper: The Deep Web
85% of web users use search engines to locate information on the web, but most of them say their biggest frustration is the inability to find what they are looking for. Search engines find websites by either authors submitting the website or by crawling the web through links. Crawling can lead to too many results from a search and with crawling websites that are not linked will not be found. The authors have found that listings on search engines are often delayed, sometimes by three or four months. Additionally searchable databases are not found through search engines. The Deep Web, which is outside the listings of traditional search engines, is just beginning to be explored. Searching needs to include the complete web, not just the surface web or deep web.
